Rowan took in a deep breath before stepping out beyond the last of the picket fences and taking the first step on his new journey. He had already gotten his equipment and a second addition to his team from professor Oak and was now ready to make his way to the next town to purchase some more... practical supplies. His pokedex was great and everything, but it wouldn't be feeding him, nor would it heal his pokemon on their journey...
People were always worried up about the tall grass, but it didn't seem to be worrisome or troubling at all. Really it was actually quite peaceful, it was cooling, the way it rose to his knees. Sure it slowed him a bit, but it felt nice.
He was on the way to Viridian City and from there, to Pewter and the first gym! He couldn't wait to begin his challenges and prove the bond he had with his pokemon , especially with Spectre!
"Ow!" he shouted, his foot coming into contact with something unseen in the grass. "What the heck?!"

A wild hoothoot appeared! Hoothoot is usually calm until disturbed, and rarely attacks. The brown bird pokemon nearly fell over in the tall grass as a foot smacked it in the side. Luckily, the bird balanced on one foot to catch itself. Hoot! Hoothoot! the pokemon exclaimed, ready to attack. Hoothoot is ready to attack! Level: 2 Attacks: Tackle Leer

Rowan shouted in surprise as the wild Hoothoot flew up out of the grass and began shouting in aggression. He recovered quickly however, and his eyes flashed blue as he drew on his Psychic powers, one of the pokeballs flying from his belt and opening, releasing the pokemon within.
"All right Aqua! Let's do this!" he shouted as the small Squirtle materialized out of the capsule with a cry of eagerness. "Don't attack just yet, but if it attacks, counter it with your Scald attack before it lands the hit!" he added through Telepathy.
He looked to the Hoothoot and projected his voice into its mind. "Wait! I'm sorry that I kicked you, it was a complete accident, I promise. We don't have to do this you know... I don't want to hurt you, I'd actually like to be friends. You could come with me on my journey to defeat the Gym Leaders and the Elite Four!"
He was telling it the truth, even if he was going to capture it no matter the answer. It did look like a hatchling though, and that made him feel bad about battling it outright. He'd much prefer it if they could simply talk it out... after all, they could understand each other through his telepathy...

Hoothoot's wide eyes peered into the young trainers blue eyes. "You can understand me?" the brown bird pokemon thought. It's eyes, opening even wider. The thought of a human understanding the Pokemon sent it's mind into a world of confusion, not knowing what to do the little bird pokemon began to vigorously flap it's wings.

Rowan shielded his eyes from the sudden flurry of loose leaves and blades of grass that the hatchling bird had unintentionally kicked up with its surprised fluttering. He coughed a bit before casting his thoughts, uninterrupted by his coughing, to the small Hoothoot.
"Yes, yes, I can understand you. I am a Psychic." he replied via the mental link, holding up his hand, his powers stopping the dirt and other objects by manifesting in a sort of small telekinetic shield. It wasn't much, but this situation didn't require much, just something to keep the foreign agents from stinging his eyes and clogging his throat.
"Calm down now, I already said I don't want to hurt you."
He looked down to Aqua. "You okay, Aqua?", he coughed.
"Squirtle, squirt!" she replied, coughing as well, before adding a mental complaint about now raising the shield BEFORE they got dirt and stuff all over and in them.
"Good..." he then spoke into her mind. "And because I don't have Future Sight... I'm not an Abra, you know!" a small mental chuckle finished off his sentence before he turned back to the Hoothoot.
"So... whaddya say? You interested at all? You could see the world, have certain meals, and never worry about a predator again if you come..."

From his position behind a nearby tree, Balthazar watched the commotion unfolding before him. At first, everything appeared to be normal. The boy kicked a hoothoot, so it attacked. It was simple. But then something strange began to happen. The hoothoot is acting....Odd. Balthazar frowned. Odd..That's the only word I can think of to describe it. There seemed to be something happening between it and the boy, but what exactly it was, he couldn't even begin to explain.
"Char!" came a loud cry from beside him. "Char! Char!"
Balthazar started, then quickly turned and hushed his companion. "Be quiet, Sol. Do you want him to know that we're here?" His charmander just grinned at him. "Honestly, I'm starting to wonder if you're really cut out for this job. You know you have to stay quiet, so why don't you?"
"Char?"
He sighed. "Whatever. Just be quiet from now on, okay?"
He turned back to face the trainer in the battle with the wild pokemon. Certainly he must have heard him by now. Let's just hope that he hasn't; that would certainly make my life much easier. He took a step back, concealing himself in the shadows strewn by the foliage. This job is not for the faint of heart.
It has already been about a year since he had joined Team Rocket, and in that time, well, let's just say he did some less-than-pleasant things. What is it that so draws me to this line of work? he had often wondered over the past few months. Am I evil? Or am I just lost?
He shook his head, dispelling all thoughts of the past. What does it matter why I joined? I'm here, and I'm going to do what I have to to keep going. At this thought, he stepped out of the shadows and faced the other trainer. "Hey you!" he called, "You think we can talk when you're done with that hoothoot?"

"That all depends on what you want to talk about." He said, just loudly enough that the lurking stranger could hear him, not once taking his eyes off of the Hoothoot. "I'm only stopped now because I literally tripped over this Hoothoot. I need to get to the next town and get supplies so I can get to the gym in Pewter City relatively unscathed." he paused a moment, realizing that the stranger probably was wondering why he was not startled by his 'sudden' appearance. "Your Charmander is reeeeally loud. I've known you were there for for like, the last five minutes, but you can't blame it all on him, you're pretty loud too... My Squirtle has been on edge for a couple minutes now."
He wasn't trying to be rude, he was just concentrating really hard on befriending this Hoothoot, and if you wanted to get all technical, the strange, older teen was the rude one for creepering behind the tree.
Slowly, he reached into his pocket and brought out a pokeball, enlarging it and letting it rest in his outstretched palm. Once more he entered the little owl's mind and spoke. "All you have to do to come with me is go into the ball." he told it, projecting the truthfulness of his words along with the message. "It won't hurt, not one little bit, and then you can come with me wherever I go. All you need to do is touch the little button in the center and we can be friends. I'd never leave you, and I will always take care of you."
His lips pulled back a little in a genuine smile. He didn't show his teeth, as he didn't want to scare it, but it was obvious that he was being sincere...
<He means it! I've only been with him a little bit, but he has been really nice to me. His other pokemon says he's nice too, and he has been with him since forever!> Aqua chimed in, speaking poketongue. She didn't know what Rowan was saying, but he had told her of his plan to try to talk to the little bird, and she wanted to help him. It was true she didn't know him that well, but he hadn't given her any reason to doubt him yet! It didn't help that Spectre was always singing high praises of him...

The wild Hoothoot sat puzzled for a minute, thinking about whether or not it should go with him. Suddenly, it heard the noise of something else approaching, its fear began to rise. If it went with the trainer, it was promised safety, if it didn't. it could get severely hurt.. Slowly, the Hoothoot began to walk toward the trainer and Squirtle, before it finally pressed it's small yellow beak into the middle of the Pokeball. A red light began to absorb the Pokemon up, into the ball.

"That all depends on what you want to talk about." |
[/s] Balthazar tilted his head, thinking about the best way to respond. Normally he just had to put on a sweet, little smile, then he would have his mark eating out of his hands. But this boy just seemed different somehow, and not in a good way. This boy wouldn't be so simple, so easy. He might have to put some thought into this one. "I'm only stopped now because I literally tripped over this Hoothoot. I need to get to the next town and get supplies so I can get to the gym in Pewter City relatively unscathed."Do you honestly think I care what you're doing out here? a voice screamed in his mind, wiping away all his thoughts about what to say. He bit down on his lip to prevent his annoyance from spilling out. It wouldn't do him any good if he snapped at this trainer. No, no. He needed him to trust him. But how? How could he do that? I don't have much time, he thought, I haven't been doing well enough lately. I need to make up for it. A malicious thought spread across his brain. I suppose I could always just hurt him. He narrowed his eyes slightly. No. It never feels as rewarding that way."Your Charmander is reeeeally loud. I've known you were there for for like, the last five minutes, but you can't blame it all on him, you're pretty loud too."[/s] Balthazar couldn't help but scoff at this. Him, loud? Never. Sol yes, but him, no. His lips moved into something that appeared to be halfway between a smile and a snarl. Oh, how I would love to get my hands on him.But he stood back and watched as the trainer continued his abnormally calm fight with the hoothoot. He stared in near amazement as the hoothoot walked right up to the boy and willingly put itself in the Poke Ball. Something strange is definitely going on here. This was it, the battle was over. Balthazar walked forward slowly. "I guess you're done now. So, how's about we have a nice little talk, eh?" He knew friendly wasn't the approach this time, so instead he went for intimidation. It was just as effective. As he walked, he eyed the boy's squirtle with curiosity. "That would make an excellent catch." he murmured. Rowan breathed a sigh of triumph as the Hoothoot entered the ball and as it clicked a few moments later, signaling a successful capture. He now had a third member of his team, a pretty well rounded one as well. One of the hardier flying types, the Hoothoot would make a great addition once he got some training in with it, especially once it learned to use some of its Psychic capabilities.
He pocketed the ball as the other teen began walking towards he and Aqua, a look on his face that he didn't quite like.
He narrowed his eyes as the other spoke. 'Is he... Is he trying to intimidate me?' he thought angrily as he heard the slight edge in the other's voice, the sort of carefree cheeriness from before having vanished.
Rowan watched him closely as he came even closer, observing the way in which he was eyeing Aqua, almost... hungrily. She apparently took notice as well, perhaps even more than he, as she was now behind his leg and pulling on his trousers. He looked down for a minute and saw the look in her eyes. She didn't like him, but she didn't say anything more, she just didn't like him. <Squirrr-rrr-rrrtllle>
"I'm sorry?" he asked. He had heard the other teen say something, but didn't know what. "I didn't quite catch that last bit. You said you'd like to 'talk', but then you sort of trailed off." He put an emphasis on the word talk, since he didn't like the way that the other's tone had changed, nor the way he was looking at his pokemon.
"I'm gonna have to ask you to stop right there." he said, his voice unwavering. "You're scaring my Pokemon." He wasn't sure what to make of the other boy, but the closer he came, the more wary Rowan got...

Balthazar's green eyes flickered as he neared the trainer and his pokemon. This was it. This was what he needed. A chance to prove himself, to show that he was strong. That's all I need, he thought, It's gotten me this far already. Who knows how far it can help me go? His lips twitched. A squirtle is quite a rare pokemon. It would look excellent for me if I brought one back. I know the one who gave me Sol was rewarded. I can get those rewards too. He looked up, matching his gaze with the trainer. It's so easy.
"I'm sorry? I didn't quite catch that last bit. You said you'd like to 'talk', but then you sort of trailed off."
Balthazar chuckled. "Oh? I must apologize. I just said how lovely your squirtle is." A sinister tone had taken root in his voice. His words rang out, but were spoken barely above a whisper; they were eerie, but his smooth, velvety voice made them sound soothing all the same. How terrifying he could be when he truly tried, but would this boy be afraid? Of that he was not sure.
"I'm gonna have to ask you to stop right there. You're scaring my Pokemon."
And there was his answer, delivered in those two simple sentences. The boy would not give in to him. He would have to use force. "Have it your way then."
Simultaneously, he pulled a small red and white ball from his belt and snapped his fingers, calling Sol to his side. A bright red light shone from the center of the Poke Ball and when it vanished, a pidgey was left standing in the area where it had touched the ground.
"Sol, ember. Caeli, gust."
Those four words were all it took. As soon as they had passed from his lips, his pokemon snapped into action. The pidgey rose up high, flapping her wings to create a whirlwind, and the charmander braced himself and shot a ball of flame towards the other trainer. Rowan was taken aback and barely had time to react. It appeared Aqua had been right about the stranger, as his voice quickly took on a deeply malevolent tone and he called forth his pokemon to attack! The Charmander he had heard shot forth a small ball of fire toward him! Not even at his pokemon, but at him! Only one sort of people would do that, and he knew exactly who... Team Rocket... He was barely aware of the Pidgey emerging and beginning to flap its wings, he was too concentrated on the ball of fire speeding towards him at a rapid clip. His eyes brightened a little bit, but not much as it didn't take much to divert the low-powered ball of flame just enough so that it missed him. Barely, but still a miss... He and Aqua turned against the gust that was now being whipped against them, it not bothering the pokemon very much since she had already been behind him, and he shouted out. "That was a very, bad move..."As the wind died down a little bit he faced the villain, his eyes now glowing brightly, the intense blue hue shining out as he tapped into his powers. Two pokeballs, flew from his pocket and belt, untouched by his hands, and released the pokemon within with two bright flashes of white light. Spectre, Hoothoot, and Aqua now stared at the other boy and his pokemon, with Spectre glaring at the three who attacked. He could sense Rowan's anger and knew why he had been called out. "A VERY bad... move..."Rowan suddenly cackled wickedly, much like a ghost, and rose up about an inch, suspending himself by his powers in a show of intimidation before he too, glared at the ones who attacked he and his pokemon, his bright blue eyes shining wildly. He knew that the other's pokemon out-leveled his own, so his best bet was putting on a good show... His hands reached out as he floated in mid-air, and he entered the minds of his pokemon. "Spectre, Hoothoot, hit the Pidgey with your Hypnosis and Tackle attacks respectively! And Aqua, you soak that Charmander with your best Scald attack, now go!"A ghostly cackle, much more frightening than Rowan's split the air as Spectre flew up alongside the newly caught Hoothoot after the Pidgey, Hypnotic energy pulses firing toward it, the young Hoothoot flying closely behind them, ready to ram the other bird. Below the arial onslaught, Aqua puffed up in anger and summoned forth a stream of boiling hot water and sprayed it at the Charmander. Both Rowan and Aqua knew the heat probably wouldn't bother it, but the jet of water would if it hit...

Balthazar watched as his charmander's ball of fire shot towards the other trainer. He knew the attack would most likely miss- because, seriously, who would not dodge that?- but it did not matter to him if it did indeed hit. Why should he care if some random person was hurt by his hand? What did it matter? To him, it really didn't. People are cruel, he thought, They deserve everything they get.
The boy dodged it. Yay for him. As Balthazar looked on, the trainer released two more pokemon: a gastly and the hoothoot he had just caught. The strange thing was, the boy never touched the balls. They just flew out on their own. Great, a psychic. A small feeling of trepidation flashed across his heart, then he smiled, pushing away the fear. Should be fun.
"That was a very, bad move...A VERY bad... move..." |
[/s] He grinned. "Maybe so, but you'll never know until you try."The boy seemed to be doing something strange now. He was laughing in a bizarre fashion and he raised himself an inch above the ground. He was trying to intimidate him, that much was clear, but did he really think that he pull it off? For a brief second, Balthazar forgot about the battle and he laughed. "Do you honestly think that you, a boy -a child- could possibly hope to intimidate me?" He paused. "I have seen countless acts of dark hearts in my life, and I have looked into the face of true evil. Believe me when I say that you are nothing -nothing- compared to the men I know."His mind snapped back to the fight and the other boy's pokemon began to attack. The hoothoot and gastly went for his pidgey, and the squirtle for his charmander. "Sol, Caeli, dodge."Both his pokemon immediately sprung into action. Sol jumped to his left, narrowly dodged the avoiding the scalding stream of water headed towards him. Balthazar, who had been standing right behind his team, moved to the right. The attack knicked his left leg, and he winced as his flesh burned. It's just a flesh wound. I'll deal with it later.Caeli dropped to the ground. She had manged to avoid the brunt of the gastly's attack, but had still been affected by it. She was not asleep, but she was groggy, very groggy. Let's hope she can pull this off. The attack on her was not finished; the hoothoot was still coming. Just as it was about to reach the dazed pidgey, Sol threw himself in front of her, and realeased a thick cloud of black smoke in the other bird's face. "Sol, make sure she's okay." he murmured. "Then you know what to do."The charmander glanced at his owner, then turned back to the other pokemon. He stood, blocking the three others from reaching Caeli as she recovered. His blue eyes focused in on the other trainer's team. He was daring them to attack. Rowan lowered himself to the ground once he saw that his display of power was not doing anything more than taxing his own concentration. The two were at a stalemate it seemed, in terms of intimidation anyway... "So you've met a psychic before? I can't say I'm surprised, as we aren't rare, but I bet you've never faced one who was practically raised by Sabrina herself, now have you?" he asked, a bit of a haughty sneer tinting his words and expression. Dropping Sabrina's name was sure to inspire a bit of uncertainty, whether the other showed it or not. The child remark he simply brushed aside, there wasn't more than a year or two between them, and he would not fall for the other boy's bait - he was seventeen, and knew better than to let his guard down, and that was without the increased maturity the intense mental training he received during his over ten years at the Saffron gym brought him.
The small Hoothoot flapped furiously in pursuit of the other bird, attempting to help her new trainer. This was obviously the danger that she had heard earlier before joining her new flock. She had almost hit the Pidgey, the help from the other ghost slowing her greatly, but then she saw only an orange blur, followed by a choking black smokescreen! Thankfully, her Keen Eyes kept her from being disoriented by the smog, the only damage it having done was smelling and tasting absolutely horrid to her sensitive palate. She coughed quietly as she continued, her small body smacking into the bigger Charmander who jumped in the way of her, as she'd been going to fast to change her direction. She probably didn't do too much... she wasn't very strong, something her new trainer had promised to help her with, though she didn't know what he could do...
"To me!" Rowan spoke into their minds as they finished the first waves of their attacks, some more successful than others. "You all did great, now just keep it up!" he finished via telepathy as they gathered in front of him, the older two of his pokemon returning the glare they were receiving from the other, while the small Hoothoot still looked a bit unsure of herself.
"Hoothoot, you did great, now hit them with a Leer attack! Aqua, fire off another Scald, this time at the Pidgey. Spectre, you Lick that Charmander and try to paralyze it so it'll be out of commission!"
Rowan smiled as his pokemon went to work, Spectre cackling and shimmering before vanishing from sight. <I shall do my best, Rowan....> he told him through their link. <... they will rue the day they crossed us...>
Hoothoot also began to help out, her eyes turning a very wicked looking scarlet, a sinister glint appearing as she Leered at the pair of pokemon. No sooner than she had finished, a second jet of steaming water shot from Aqua's mouth toward the droopy bird that the Charmander was trying to defend, the grass that it touched turning brown on the way. <You guys are freaking jerks, you know?!> Aqua yelled at the opposing pokemon as she finished her attack.
Meanwhile, Spectre was appearing and disappearing all around the Charmander: first in front, then behind, then another direction, he kept this up for several seconds, randomizing his appearances, before finally lashing forward with his unearthly chilling tongue in the hopes of not only damaging, but also striking a paralyzing fear into the Charmander's core...

"So you've met a psychic before? I can't say I'm surprised, as we aren't rare, but I bet you've never faced one who was practically raised by Sabrina herself, now have you?"
Balthazar wasn't certain what the boy hoped to accomplish by mentioning Sabrina, but, whatever it was, he was not going to get it. These days, very little could faze Balthazar; the simple mention of a gym leader was not going to change anything. Besides, who was even to say the boy was telling the truth? He could be lying. There was no way to tell.
"Even if I did believe you," he began, a smirk spreading across his face, "do you honestly think that would frighten me? I'm not some child who'll go running back to his mother at the first hint of danger. You really ought to give me more credit."
He studied the boy for a moment. He didn't appear to be lying, but Balthazar could be certain. What does it matter? Raised by Sabrina or not, he's still not Sabrina herself. It'll take more than him to frighten me.
"She okay, Sol?" he murmured to his charmander as the other trainer called his pokemon back to him. For a moment, he tore his gaze away from his opponent and looked at Caeli. She still looked dazed, but seemed to be improving. Good.
Under the gaze of the hoothoot's red eyes, the two pokemon could feel their defences being depleted. In response, Sol let out a loud growl in attempt to bring down their attack.
"Sol." An attack was headed for Caeli. That damn squirtle had used Scald again. "You've got this."
Sol dug his fangs into the neck feathers of his partner. "A little help here?" he grunted. Caeli, though still weak, had recovered enough to help. She flapped her wings and together the pair leapt, narrowly avoiding the jet of boiling water headed towards them.
You guys are freaking jerks, you know?! |
[/s] To this, Caeli responded. "We're merely doing what is asked of us, just like you. To you, it may not be right, but to me, what would be wrong would be to disobey him."Just after these words left her mouth, a gastly appeared, and it was heading for Sol. "Careful." Balthazar warned. Sol threw his friend out of the way and was hit, full-on by the gastly's attack. For a brief moment, he lay there stunned, then he stood. The attack hadn't paralyzed him. Excellent. Balthazar's lips twitched. "Try again, Sol. You too, if you can, Caeli."Again, Sol shot out a ball of fire, though this time it was aimed at the gastly. At the same time, the pidgey picked herself up of the ground and began to create another whirlwind.
